Promoting Mental Health in Schools

About the Course
This intermediate-level course provides a broad and comprehensive discussion of issues related to behavioral and mental health in schools and presents strategies for prevention, intervention, assessment, and referrals. Emphasizing practical application, assessment, and treatment interventions, this course summarizes multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and common mental health concerns in school settings, including behavioral, anxiety and depressive-related disorders, substance abuse, child abuse, trauma, and crisis intervention. These topics are explored in relation to multicultural, social justice, and developmental considerations. Family involvement and collaboration with outside service providers and systems is also addressed.
 

Social Workers completing this course receive 4 clinical social work continuing education credits.
 

Psychologists will receive 4 CE credits upon successfully completing this course.
 

• Identify common concerns in school settings, spanning grades K-12.
• Recognize why Multi-Tiered Systems of Support are important to promote mental health in schools.
• Describe specific behavioral and mental health disorders for children that influence school performance.
• Explain the different interventions used to address behavioral and mental health challenges in school-age populations.
• Describe trauma-informed assessment, practices, and therapeutic approaches in school-based settings.
• Identify prevention and intervention strategies for crisis intervention.

Amy L. Cook, PhD is an assistant professor in the Counseling and School Psychology Department, College of Education and Human Development at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She received a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Connecticut, Storrs. She has worked in urban schools and mental health agencies, providing counseling services to students and families.
 

Laura A. Hayden, EdD, is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Counseling and School Psychology Department in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She received an EdD in Counseling Psychology from Boston University. She has worked in urban schools in both leadership and counseling capacities, supporting the socioemotional and academic development of all students.
