About the CourseThis course provides Washington State’s required information about the background and statistical data of suicide within the U.S. and Washington State. It presents the etiology of suicide, suicide risk, assessment, treatment, and management as well as the risk of imminent harm. The course includes communication strategies with a special focus on the veteran population. The course has been reviewed and approved by the Washington State Department of Health. The course’s state approval number is TRNG.TG.60725896-SUIC.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to
- Identify correct suicide terminology.
- Distinguish between suicide myths and facts.
- Outline the prevalence of suicide globally, in the United States, and in the State of Washington.
- Describe the Washington State Suicide Initiative.
- Identify risk factors and warning signs for suicide.
- Screen patients for depression and suicidality using various screening forms.
- Understand how to talk to patients at risk for suicide and how to structure an assessment interview.
- Identify levels of risk for suicide.
- Record proper documentation of suicide risk.
- Manage the patient’s depression and level of suicidality.
- Plan interventions related to the suicidal patient’s depression and underlying causes.
- Understand when to refer a suicidal patient to a mental health specialist.
- Address safety for patients who are at risk for suicide through lethal means removal and creation of a crisis response plan.
- Identify suicide prevention strategies.
- Identify the resources to assist health care providers in managing suicidal risk in patients.
- Identify the reasons for an increased risk among the veteran population.
- Distinguish between suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury.
Margaret N. Hughes MSN, RN, PMHNP, CPRNP-PC, is a dual-certified psychiatric-mental health and pediatric nurse practitioner who graduated from the Yale School of Nursing in 2016 and from Northeastern University School of Nursing in 2021. She currently works at a small outpatient psychiatric practice in Boston, MA providing psychiatric care across the lifespan. Prior, she worked at a university health center providing healthcare to college students and worked at community-based and school-based health centers providing primary care to high-risk, medically underserved populations.
About the Reviewer
Scott Deatherage, PhD, is a licensed psychologist with a master’s degree in School Counseling and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Purdue University. He served three years on active duty as a clinical psychologist in the United States Air Force (USAF). He oversaw clinical operations for outpatient mental health, substance abuse prevention and treatment, primary care behavioral health programs, and supervised licensed and unlicensed mental and behavioral health providers. Dr. Deatherage’s professional engagement has centered on clinical practice, research, curriculum development, and teaching. Clinically, Dr. Deatherage has received extensive training in primary care behavioral health, assessment, and management of suicide risk across various clinical settings, and in the management and treatment of trauma and stressor-related disorders. His research activity has supported assessing person-environment fit for individuals in high-stress/high-demand career fields. As a faculty member at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, Dr. Deatherage was selected to develop and implement a mental health curriculum and training program for new USAF civilians and contractors.
