Ethics for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork

This course emphasizes the principles and standards of ethical practice for massage therapy and bodywork, and ethical issues that impact the professional in daily practice. The course includes steps to identify potential ethical con?icts, and strategies for ethical decision making to avoid and resolve ethical issues before they become problematic.

 

1. Identify the principles of the professional Code of Ethics from the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), the National Certi?cation Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB), and the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP).

2. List and de?ne ?ve standards of practice from the AMTA, the ABMP and the NCBTMB, and give an example of each standard.

3. Explain the concepts of power dynamics, transference, and counter transference related to the scope of practice in massage and bodywork.

4. List ?ve key elements of documentation and records maintenance, including the HIPAA Privacy Rule.

5. De?ne the risks involved with dual or multiple-role relationships between therapists and clients and list four strategies that reinforce appropriate boundaries.

6. Explain the relationship between patient autonomy and therapist/ client agreements, including the client’s bill of rights, informed consent, and right to refuse treatment.

 

Danielle Almendinger has over 17 years of experience in the massage therapy industry. She has worked in various aspects of the field. Starting out in the spa and chiropractic settings led her to opening her own practice. It was here that she specialized with women in the areas of reproductive health, pregnancy, and postpartum recovery. As the years went on Danielle’s desire to teach others grew. She can now be found either teaching at the local massage school or traveling teaching continuing education to massage therapists.
