About the Course
The baby boomers have come of age, society is graying, and there is expected to be an explosion of our oldest, the geriatric population. Older patients may have multiple issues caused by normal aging changes and have an increase in deficits caused by the effects of chronic disease. Care for this older population involves identifying deficits, diagnosing geriatric syndromes and chronic diseases, preventing further decline, and fulfilling our senior citizens' unique needs and requirements.


Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the causes of iatrogenesis and its effects on the older adult.
  • Differentiate among the categories of urinary incontinence by cause and symptoms.
  • Select nursing interventions for the prevention and treatment of altered bowels.
  • Identify helpful strategies to prevent and treat pressure injury.
  • Select an appropriate intervention for physical functional impairment.
  • Examine risk factors for falls in older adults.
  • Analyze factors that indicate a client is at nutritional risk.


About the Author
Lisa Byrd, Ph.D., FNP-C, GNP-C, FAANP, Gerontologist, is a Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years of experience working with older patients in direct patient care. She has experience in hands-on care in the outpatient setting, inpatient hospital setting, nursing home care, and telehealth. Dually board certified as both Family Nurse Practitioner and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, she has previously worked in administrative roles as well as worked as a nurse educator for over 10 years at the University of South Alabama and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She actively teaches at the University of South Alabama in the Masters and Doctoral level AGNP programs. She has organized and presented numerous educational offerings, including advanced practice nursing educational conferences. Dr. Byrd designed an Acute Care for Elders (ACE) hospital inpatient unit and served as a consultant for the creation of a Seniors Emergency Department. She has presented at national nursing as well as nurse practitioner conferences and has numerous publications in journals and nursing textbooks.

Tonya Kasselman is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Her background is in skilled rehabilitation, long-term care, assisted living, and diabetes management, and geriatric care. She received her BSN in 2003 from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. She received her MSN in 2011 from Wichita State University.
