About the Course
Eating disorders are serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses that impact both the physical and psychological development of children and adolescents. This course will discuss the three most common eating disorders affecting adolescents and the current trends in incidence, early signs to help staff recognize a possible eating disorder, and treatment modalities. 


Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of the three most common eating disorders. 
  • Discuss the effects of COVID-19 on the incidence of eating disorders in adolescents. 
  • Describe the current guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics on adolescent eating disorders. 
  • Describe possible treatments for adolescents with eating disorders. 
  • Explain the nurse’s role in caring for adolescents with eating disorders. 

About the Author
Lauren Bland, CFNP, MSN, has worked as a family nurse practitioner serving patients with anorexia on both a residential level and outpatient basis. She has been a nurse practitioner since 2009 and has 12 years of experience working with outpatient pediatrics and inpatient neonatal care, specializing in complex cases with a variety of diagnoses.

Margaret Hughes MSN, RN, PMHNP, CPRNP-PC, is a dual-certified psychiatric–mental health and pediatric nurse practitioner who graduated from the Yale School of Nursing in 2016 and from Northeastern University School of Nursing in 2021. She currently works at a small outpatient psychiatric practice in Boston providing psychiatric care across the life span. Prior to this, she worked at a university health center providing healthcare to college students and has also worked at community-based and school-based health centers providing primary care to high-risk medically underserved populations.
