Diagnosis and Management of Tick-Borne Illness - N33534
23.95
About the Course:
Tick-borne diseases are increasing in prevalence and, as the geographic distribution and rates of transmission of well-known diseases increase, so does the incidence of lesser known tick-borne infections (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019a). As the incidence of tick-borne diseases increases, nurses must maintain knowledge of the clinical presentation of illnesses and continue a high index of suspicion for tick-borne disease. Many of these infections initially present with vague and viral-like symptoms. Knowledge of the components that indicate tick-borne disease in a patient’s history and presentation will help the nurse identify the correct malady. This course reviews the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, workup, and management of three tick-borne conditions increasing in prevalence around the United States: Lyme disease, Powassan virus, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The course will help nurses distinguish between these tick-borne diseases and viral illness or erythematous rashes. Additionally, the course reviews post-Lyme disease syndrome, treatment of Lyme disease coinfections, and prevention of tick attachment.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify the components of history and examine which differentiate Lyme disease, Powassan virus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and other common tick-borne illness.
- State the rationale behind the two-step testing process for Lyme disease.
- State the other tick-borne diseases that may exist with Lyme disease infection.
- Discuss diagnostic testing for Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
- Counsel patients on prevention of tick attachment, proper removal of ticks, and management of tick bites in the absence of vector-borne disease symptoms.
- Summarize the evidence for early doxycycline treatment for Rocky Mountain spotted fever in children with intent to spread knowledge to other clinicians about this potentially fatal diagnosis and the importance of early and appropriate management.
