About the Course:
Even though reported rates for domestic violence (DV) have decreased, DV continues to have a negative impact on our society. DV is a national healthcare concern that requires immediate attention by healthcare providers. Caring for victims of domestic violence requires knowledge by healthcare providers for prompt recognition and assessment, having an awareness of available local resources, and understanding state and national laws that govern practice. This course is intended to provide nurses with the information to better understand the concept of domestic and sexual violence and be prepared to care for their patients who are at risk or have been a target of domestic or sexual violence. The course presents information about the prevalence of domestic and sexual violence and the impact it has on individual patients and on society. Different forms of domestic and sexual violence and the sequelae on selected populations’ health care is discussed. Also, national laws are reviewed to enhance the reader’s knowledge on the resources available and the legal issues encountered by victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Kelly A. Crum, PhD (c), MSN, RN, is a nursing education consultant serving schools on accreditation, faculty and program development, and curriculum matters. In addition, she currently serves as an international nursing education consultant and is the expert nurse consultant for Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences. With 27 years of nursing education experience, she has held various nursing positions in both clinical and academic settings.
