About the Course
The infant formula recall in 2022 contributed to a shortage of infant formula in the U.S. This course will explore the supply chain of formula, the reason for the recall and subsequent shortage, and the government’s response. In addition, treatment of malnourished children who have been fed whole cow milk or homemade formulas will be addressed.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Recognize causes of the current infant formulas including the systems by which infant formula are produced, regulated and distributed including the WIC program
  • Recognize specific government interventions to resolve the formula shortage including the importation of formulas into the US not previously allowed for importation
  • Understand possible benefits as well as costs of novel aspects of infant formulas being used currently including goat’s milk-based, A2 milk and partial hydrolysates
  • Identify the risks, assessment strategies and treatment of malnutrition in children fed whole cow milk or homemade formulas during shortages 
  • Describe the impact of the infant formula shortage on parents.
About the Presenter
Steven Abrams, MD
is board certified in general pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. He is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics/Dell Medical School, University of Texas in Austin. He was selected as Fellow, American Society for Nutrition in 2022,and elected fellow with the American Institute of Biology and Medicine in Engineering among other awards and recognitions.  He is Co-Editor in Chief, Pediatric Nutrition Handbook, 9th Edition (Yellow Book, primary Nutrition publication of the American Academy of Pediatrics). He is the co-author of three books and has authored numerous peer reviewed articles.
