About the Course
Domestic violence is perpetrated by someone who is or was involved in an intimate relationship with the victim. It may include repeated battering and injury, psychological abuse, sexual assault, progressive social isolation, or deprivation and intimidation. In 2013, the United States first developed a national protocol to identify this type of violence as well as identification, treatment, and prevention methods. Today, that protocol has matured into best practices and standardization for IPV care throughout the U.S. It is currently estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced some type of intimate partner violence. This in-depth video course explores the epidemiology, incidence and prevalence of IPV as well as best practice standards and state mandatory reporting requirements.

- Identify populations at risk for intimate partner violence (IPV).
- Discuss varying state reporting mandates in cases of IPV.
- Explain the various screening assessments and tools used in working with a survivor of IPV.
- Explain the effects of the injuries sustained by a survivor of IPV.
- Discuss nursing approaches, assessment, and care for the patient who has been affected by IPV.
About the Presenter
Valerie Sievers, MSN, RN, CNS, SANE-A, SANE-P, DF-AFN, is a Forensic Clinical Nurse Specialist with more than 35 years of health care experience as a registered nurse, advanced practice nurse, educator, and consultant with extensive practice experience in the arenas of emergency and critical care nursing, academic education and forensic clinical practice. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Val provides advanced education regarding the care and treatment of patients affected by interpersonal violence and abuse. She is currently board certified as an adult-adolescent and pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner, serves as a founding board member of the Academy of Forensic Nursing and is the owner of Med Law Consultants, LLC, a forensic healthcare consulting practice.
