This podcast series discusses something that has been brewing for years. Should nurses have to share personal information regarding their mental health and/or their psychiatric history for licensure or relicensure? If you are a nurse preparing to take your nursing board exam or if you have been a nurse for any length of time, what would you do if you looked at your information for obtaining a license or renewing an existing license and saw a question about divulging your personal mental health history? In some states, this is an issue that nurses face.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Discuss the current controversial issue regarding nursing boards asking about mental health information in association with licensure.
  • Examine what the Americans with Disability Act says about asking for mental health information.
  • Identify one reason a board of nursing would want to know about a nurse’s mental or psychiatric health and one reason nurses might feel reluctant to provide this kind of information to a board of nursing.

About the Presenters
Judy Davidson, DNP, RN, MCCM, FAAN, is a nurse scientist and thought leader whose research has centered on suicide of healthcare professionals, suicide prevention, workplace wellness, and second victim syndrome. She led the development of the first suicide prevention program for nurses, which was awarded Edge Runner status, or a model for replication, by the American Academy of Nursing. As a researcher, an editor of a nursing journal, and an educational consultant, she has a wealth of information to share about the impact of intrusive licensure questions on healthcare professionals. 

Margaret Halter, PhD, APRN, is a PhD-prepared advanced practice registered nurse. Her expertise includes undergraduate and graduate psychiatric nursing and program development. She currently edits a leading psychiatric nursing undergraduate textbook and serves on several volunteer mental health–focused boards. Health policy is an area of personal interest, and she has held local, state, and national leadership positions as an advocate for the profession of nursing and our patients.

Marie Manthey, PhD (hon), MNA, FAAN, FRCN, has many claims to nursing prominence. She was a founder of primary nursing care delivery who was named a living legend of the American Academy of Nursing in 2015. She is currently president emeritus of Creative Health Care Management and spends much time talking about and spreading awareness of mental health and substance use disorders. She also participated in the development of the Minnesota Nursing Peer Support Network.

  • Specific to Florida: A mandatory Final Examination with a passing score of 70% or higher is required. Exam questions link content to the course Learning Outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention. 
  • Provide required personal and payment information. 
  • Complete the mandatory course evaluation. 
  • Print your Certificate of Completion.
