About the Course
Atrial fibrillation is a common healthcare problem. This course reviews the concepts of cardiac output, risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF), classifications of AF, the pearls of obtaining a history and physical of a patient with AF, diagnostic testing, and the overall implications for pharmacologic management. APRN prescribing considerations and evidence-based practice guidelines are included in this course. 

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
  • Describe the pathophysiology of and risk factors for the development of atrial fibrillation (AF) related to cardiac output.
  • Review the relevant history and physical assessment for AF to a case study. 
  • Distinguish among the diagnostic tests utilized for AF.
  • Differentiate between paroxysmal, persistent, and permanent/chronic atrial fibrillation. 
  • Explain the complications of AF.
  • Examine the prescribing principles of pharmacologic management of AF.
About the Author
Therese Jamison, DNP, ACNP-BC, is the founding director of nursing at Lawrence Technological University.  She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Vanderbilt University, post master’s acute care nurse practitioner certification at The University of Michigan, and BSN, and MSN at Wayne State University.  She has been an associate of Ascension-St. John-Providence Health Care System since 1981. Dr. Jamison has spent her entire nursing career in critical care nursing with an emphasis on caring for patients with cardiac illnesses. She currently practices as an acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) in cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Jamison has an extensive history as an educator for undergraduate (BSN), primary care, and acute care nurse practitioner students.
