About the Course
Men experience disparate health conditions in the United States (U.S). A silent health crisis affects the lives of men, their families, significant others, and communities. The country’s and citizens’ health depends on addressing this men’s health crisis and recognizing men’s health as a critical healthcare priority. This course provides the necessary foundational information to expand the knowledge of registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses on men’s health conditions.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:  

  • Describe the scope of men’s health and its evolution as a clinical nursing specialty.?
  • Discuss the effects of gender on men’s healthcare behaviors and engagement.
  • Discuss strategies for developing and sustaining a male-oriented healthcare culture.


About the Author
Demetrius J. Porche, DNS, PhD, FNP, APRN, PCC, ANEF, FACHE, FAANP, FAAN, is dean and professor at Louisiana State University Health School of Nursing and is the founding editor and editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Men’s Health. He is certified as a family nurse practitioner and a community/public health clinical nurse specialist. He has written three textbooks: Epidemiology for the Advanced Practice Nurse: A Population Health Approach, Health Policy: Application for Nurses and Other Healthcare Professionals, and Public and Community Health Nursing Practice: A Population-Based Approach. Dr. Porche has published extensively on men’s health, leadership, administration, HIV/AIDS, and primary care. He has held leadership positions at the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Southern Nursing Research Society, Southern Regional Educational Board Council on Collegiate Education in Nursing, American Assembly for Men in Nursing, and American Association of Colleges of Nursing.  


About the Content Reviewer
O. Danny Lee, PhD, APRN-CNS, CNE, is an associate professor of nursing at Southeastern Louisiana University. He has been a nurse for 29 years and has been teaching in academia for 20 years. Dr. Lee has published and presented internationally, nationally, and locally on a variety of topics, including men’s health, policy and activism, experiences of minority faculty, work–life balance, and effective teaching/learning strategies. Dr. Lee has served in leadership roles at Sigma Theta Tau International Society for Nursing, National Association for Clinical Nurse Specialists, and the American Association for Men in Nursing. Dr. Lee has represented both the National Association for Clinical Nurse Specialists and the American Association for Men in Nursing at the Nurse in Washington Internship. Dr. Lee was recognized as one of the 50 greatest nurses in Louisiana in 2009. Dr. Lee was awarded the Lee Cohen Member of the Year Award for the American Association for Men in Nursing in 2015.
