About the Course:
Nurse practitioners who prescribe opioids have a great responsibility to ensure patients receive the care they need while preventing their prescriptions from becoming a source of abuse or diversion. This course provides an overview of the treatment of both pain and substance use disorder, the safe and effective prescribing of opioids, and the rules and regulations pertaining to Advance Practice Nurses prescribing controlled substances in Nevada.

  • Describe the evaluation and treatment of a patient in pain, including non-pharmacological interventions, non-opioid medications, and opioid therapy.
  • Illustrate the steps to take to ensure safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances used for treatment of pain and substance use disorder, including professional documentation, patient-provider agreements, and informed consent.
  • Distinguish between the concepts of substance misuse, substance use disorder, and diversion, including their recognition, risk factors, and prevention.
  • Examine the laws pertaining to the prescribing of controlled substances, including the federal medication schedules, federal prescription-filling rules, federal registration requirements, and Nevada-specific rules.

About the Author:
