About the Course
The purpose of this course is to review diagnostic criteria, insulin pharmacokinetics and dosing strategies, hypoglycemia management, and psychosocial considerations in the pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus patient. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in pediatric patients, and newly diagnosed cases are on the rise. Management of type 1 diabetes mellitus requires specialized knowledge and individualized treatment plans. All pediatric healthcare professionals should be equipped to help patients achieve glycemic control through optimized therapy and continual education. 


Learning Outcomes 
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify pathophysiology, symptoms, risk factors, and complications of type 1 diabetes in pediatric patients.
  • Compare pharmacokinetic properties of various insulin preparations.
  • Calculate basal and bolus insulin requirements for pediatric patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes.
  • Evaluate glucose readings to determine whether the current insulin regimen is effective for a patient with type 1 diabetes.
  • Compare insulin delivery methods, including benefits, limitations, and injection techniques.? 
  • Select medications and supplies needed for hypoglycemia in diabetic patients. 
  • Evaluate psychological barriers that may prevent adherence in a pediatric patient with type 1 diabetes. 


About the Author
Danielle McDonald, PharmD, BCPPS, is a pediatric clinical pharmacy specialist at Cooper University Health Care (CUHC). She earned her doctor of pharmacy degree at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. After graduation, she completed a postgraduate year (PGY)-1 pharmacy practice residency at Atlantic Health System, followed by a PGY-2 pediatric pharmacotherapy residency at Rutgers University.  

Dr. McDonald’s clinical practice areas include pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, and general pediatrics. She chairs the pediatric pharmacy and therapeutics subcommittee at CUHC and is actively involved in creating hospital-based guidelines, educating medical professionals, and writing peer-reviewed publications.
