About the Course

The purpose of this course is to equip registered nurses with the knowledge regarding suicide among nurses, factors that increase risk of suicide, signs and symptoms, intervention strategies that may prevent a death by suicide, and individual and organizational strategies that can promote well-being and reduce suicide risks. This course teaches skills on how to intervene with colleagues, how to assess self risks and concerns, and how to engage organizations in the discussion and what they can do for promoting nurse well-being and suicide prevention. 

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to: 
  • Identify factors influencing chronic stress responses among nurses and resulting consequences including trauma response, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, burnout, and intent or decision to leave the nursing profession.
  • Discuss a pathway for assessing suicidal thinking/behaviors and intention with plan for suicide.
  • Apply evidence-based actions for intervening with a nurse in suicidal crisis.
  • Discuss the confidentiality and referral process for immediate and intermediate crisis intervention.
  • Summarize suicide prevention strategies for nurses and other healthcare staff members.
  • Discuss ethical and legal considerations of caring for patients and nurses who are experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors.  

About the Author

Sharon Tucker, PhD, APRN-CNS, PMHCNS-BC, NC-BC, FNAP, FAAN,  is the Grayce Sills Endowed Professor in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing in the College of Nursing (CON) at Ohio State University (OSU).  Dr. Tucker holds board certification as an APRN-CNS in psychiatric mental health nursing and as an Integrative Nurse Coach. She is also certified as a meditation and mindfulness teacher. Dr. Tucker has practiced in the area of mental health for 35 years. Her research targets include women and children, employees (including nurses), and worksite interventions for health, well-being, resilience, and mental health. Responsive to the growing mental health concerns among nurses before, during, and after the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Tucker has created and/or led resources and programs for nurses including a set of video scenarios about how to talk to a peer, student, or colleague in mental distress or who may be suicidal. Dr. Tucker serves on the planning committee for the OSU Annual National Suicide Prevention Conference; and she is among a team of researchers who were just awarded (2022) a grant by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to focus on testing two interventions (including HEAR and MINDBODYSTRONG) for nurses in crisis. 

About the Reviewer

Robyn B. Caldwell, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC, earned a Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) from Samford University in nursing administration with an emphasis in nursing education in 2013, a post-master's certificate as a family nurse practitioner from Delta State University in 2003, a master’s degree in nursing administration (MSN) in 1996, and a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree in 1990 from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Caldwell has worked in a variety of healthcare settings throughout her 32-year career including adult and pediatric emergency nursing, nursing administration, and nursing education (LPN to DNP) in both the community college and university settings.
