About the Course
Telehealth has become an integral part in transforming healthcare and addressing challenges in the health care system. To provide accessible, quality patient care, nurses must adopt and use innovative technologies to meet these goals. This course introduces the various types of telehealth modalities and reviews the history of telehealth and their applications in nursing practice. Scope of practice issues that impact care provided by telehealth, including those that have emerged and evolved related to COVID-19, is discussed, and the course concludes with the current and future implications of telehealth on nursing practice.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the learner will able to:

  • Describe the evolution of telehealth modalities and their application in nursing practice.
  • Identify clinical use telehealth in multiple healthcare environments.
  • Understand practice issues that impact the provision of care via telehealth.
  • Explain the role of the registered nurse in provided care via telehealth.

About the Presenter
Joan Taylor, DNP, APRN, FNP-C is an experienced Nurse Practitioner with 26 years of nursing experience in a variety of nursing areas including nursing education and clinical practice. Dr. Taylor is a doctoral prepared nurse with a BSN, an MSN, a Family Nurse Practitioner Certification and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice. She is an adjunct faculty member for Purdue University Global School of Nursing. She currently teaches in the MSN and DNP programs while also working as a certified family nurse practitioner in clinical practice that includes clinical telemedicine. She has collaborated in policy development and implementation of telemedicine and recently completed a conference presentation on telehealth entitled Telehealth: Are you ready? Born and raised in a rural area Joan has the unique perspective of the barriers and needs that rural populations face and how innovative technology can be an effective tool in improving the quality of rural healthcare.
