Course Overview
This course offers healthcare providers a foundational understanding of Long COVID, a complex condition affecting patients after initial COVID-19 infection. Topics include the prevalence, risk factors, and diverse symptoms of Long COVID, along with emerging insights into its biological mechanisms. Participants will learn practical approaches for diagnosing and managing Long COVID, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary care.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Define Long COVID and explain its key distinguishing features compared to acute COVID-19 infection.
- Describe the epidemiology of Long COVID, including estimates of prevalence and identification of high-risk populations.
- Recognize the diverse array of symptoms associated with Long COVID and how they may present in a fluctuating or multisystem manner.
- Discuss proposed pathophysiological mechanisms that may underlie the development and persistence of Long COVID symptoms.
- Identify evidence-based strategies for managing the various symptoms and manifestations of Long COVID.
- Synthesize the real-world experiences and challenges faced by individuals and families impacted by Long COVID.
About the Author/Presenter
Dr. Candace Pierce, DNP, RN, CNE, COI, is a nurse leader committed to ensuring nurses are well prepared and offered abundant opportunities and resources to enhance their skills acquisition and confidence at the bedside. With 15 years in nursing, she has worked at the bedside, in management, and in nursing education. She has demonstrated expertise and scholarship in innovation and design thinking in healthcare and education, and collaborative efforts within and outside of healthcare. Scholarship endeavors include funded grants, publications, and presentations. As a leader, Dr. Pierce strives to empower others to create and deploy ideas and embrace their professional roles as leaders, change agents, and problem solvers. In her position as the lead nurse planner for Elite, she works as a project engineer with subject matter experts to develop evidence-based best practices in continuing education for nurses and other healthcare professionals.
