About the Course:
Concussion most commonly occurs during sports-related activities. The purpose of this intermediate-level course is to provide an overview of concussion with areas to assess and treat for the occupational therapy practitioner. Current evidence-based references are highlighted along with topics widely accepted in practice. This course is for practitioners who have a basic knowledge of brain injury and want to advance their skills in the assessment and treatment of concussion.

Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss the history, epidemiology, and diagnostic tests related to concussion.
  • Explain the pathophysiology, potential long-term consequences, and common signs and symptoms of concussion.
  • Describe the role of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Explain key components of the occupational therapy examination, including the appropriate tests and measures and how the findings impact prognosis.
  • Utilize appropriate client-centered interventions to address the key concussion symptoms and activity limitations.
  • Identify concussion prevention strategies and initiatives.

About the Author:
Veronica T. Rowe, PhD, OTR/L,
Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer, has been an occupational therapist for 21 years and a certified brain injury specialist trainer for 7 years. She has taught specialized practice courses on brain injury for 6 years. Prior to her academic appointment at the University of Central Arkansas as an assistant professor of Occupational Therapy, she practiced as an occupational therapist in a variety of settings, with a focus mainly in neurorehabilitation. Dr. Rowe was also employed at the Shepherd Center Acquired Brain Injury unit and worked on a neurorehabilitation research team at Emory University from 2003-2008. She has conducted research on various aspects of neurorehabilitation including numerous presentations and publications.

How to receive credit:
  • Read the entire course online or in print which requires a 2-hour commitment of time.
  • Depending on your state requirements you will be asked to complete:
    • A mandatory test (a passing score of 75 percent is required). Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
