About the Course:
In this course, you will be provided with the general presentation of the connection tissue disorder along with the genetic background before diving into each specific form of the disorder. You will also learn the prevalence, presentation, clinical diagnostic criteria that leads to testing, and recommended treatment strategies specific to each type of EDS. You will be able to recognize, appropriately refer out, and offer a grounded relationship with your patient to build a confident treatment plan.
Course Objectives:
- Identify the many roles connective tissue has within the human body and what can be involved with a connective tissue disorder.
- Identify the genetic presentation of EDS and factors that can influence genetic expression.
- Recognize the history and evolution of presentation and classifications of EDS.
- Identify the reasoning for replacement of the nosology into new classifications.
- Select the systems that can be involved in someone with a diagnosis of EDS.
- Recognize the complexity of the presentation of the disorder as whole.
- Identify the general presentation of the most common forms of EDS in the clinic (hEDS, cEDS, vEDS).
- Recognize the clinical diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses for each subgroup of EDS.
- Select the management strategies specific for the different categories of EDS if specialized and follow up care is necessary.
- Identify the difference in diagnostic criteria between the two disorders of hEDS and HSD.
- Identify the care team that may be needed and involved in an individual patient’s care.
About the Author:
Patricia Stott, PT, DPT, ATC, CHT, a licensed Physical Therapist, received her undergraduate and master’s degree from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. She continued her education, receiving her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University in Virginia and a certificate in the Upper Quarter from Drexel University, progressing to become a Certified Hand Therapist. Patricia is also a Certified Athletic Trainer and spent many years in outpatient orthopedics working with sports medicine and chronic illness. She expanded her education base in Functional Medicine and moved on to opening her own practice of health and wellness consultations for those with Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes while continuing into Pediatric Physical Therapy for those with developmental disabilities. Patricia recently coauthored a journal article, “Recognizing and Effectively Managing Hypermobility-Related Conditions” and continues to work to promote education of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes in the medical field along with patient advocacy. She is available in office or through tele-appointments worldwide for EDS consultations.
