About the Course:
This intermediate-level course provides OTs and OTAs with a detailed overview of the pathophysiology and mechanics of the joints of the hand of those diagnosed with OA. The course offers practitioners in-depth knowledge of several of the most common medical and evidence-based treatments, and it provides instruction for application of techniques in occupational therapy evaluation and intervention.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize the etiology and pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA) of the hand and wrist.
- Explain the process and criteria for reaching a clinical diagnosis of OA.
- Identify the goals and treatment options for managing OA.
- Develop an occupational therapy intervention plan for management and treatment of OA of the proximal and distal finger joints.
- Develop an occupational therapy intervention plan for the management and treatment of OA of the carpometacarpal thumb joint.
- Develop an occupational therapy intervention plan for the management and treatment of osteoarthritis of the wrist.
About the Author:
Debbie Amini, EdD, OTR/L, FAOTA, is the director of professional development for the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). She received her bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy from Quinnipiac University, her master’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and her doctorate in education from North Carolina State University. A certified hand therapist from 1991 to 2016, Dr. Amini worked as the director of an occupational therapy assistant program for 14 years before becoming an assistant professor of occupational therapy in Greenville, North Carolina. She served a 3-year term as chair of AOTA’s Commission on Practice and is the author of several AOTA official documents. Dr. Amini wrote bimonthly print columns in Advance for Occupational Therapy Practitioners for 15 years; titles included “Hands On” and “Inside Occupation.” Her articles have appeared in Advance for Directors in Rehabilitation, the PD-SIS quarterly newsletter, OT Practice magazine, and AJOT. In addition to authoring online courses and textbook chapters, she has contributed the hand, wrist, and forearm component of the Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Individuals with Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, and co-authored the Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Adults With Musculoskeletal Conditions published by AOTA. Dr. Amini has presented at the AOTA, NCOTA, and ASHT annual conferences and has conducted regional 2-day workshops on the topics of hand therapy and authentic OT practice.
