Course Overview

This course provides an in-depth exploration of pharmacology principles, drug classifications, and their implications for therapeutic practice. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of how various medications affect the body, the importance of medication management, and the collaborative role of healthcare professionals in optimizing patient outcomes. This intermediate-level course is designed for allied health professionals. It covers essential topics such as drug development, federal drug regulations, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and specific pharmaceutical categories relevant to rehabilitation therapy settings. By the end, participants will be equipped with the knowledge to integrate pharmacological considerations into their therapeutic interventions, ensuring safe and effective patient care. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Analyze the U.S. federal law regarding pharmaceuticals 
  • Categorize drug classifications and mechanisms 
  • Distinguish the fundamental pharmacodynamic physiology and pharmacokinetic processes 
  • Differentiate components of MTM and recognize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in reducing medication errors 
  • Distinguish importance of integrating pharmacological principles into multidisciplinary care to enhance patient occupational and functional outcomes 
  • Assess how to appropriate education patients on medication use, side effects, and adherence

About the Author/Presenter 

Andrew Hodgdon, PT, practices physical therapy in an acute hospital care setting. He is enthusiastic about wellness, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and movement science. He also serves as a professional writer of physical therapy content for continuing education curriculum development and other peer-reviewed publications within the physical therapy industry. He enjoys taking what he learns in the acute hospital care setting of his everyday work and translating it into subjects that are interesting, informative, and thought-provoking for others in the physical therapy profession. Currently, Andrew is the senior physical therapist at Kaiser Permanente in Fresno, California.  

Dr. Morgan Rotella, PT, DPT, received her doctorate degree in physical therapy from the Ohio State University in 2019. She has been working as an outpatient orthopedic and vestibular physical therapist for more than four years now and is a certified vestibular and concussion rehabilitation specialist per the American Institute of Balance. Outside of working as a clinician, she works as an author and editor for health blogs and video content to ensure appropriate information is available regarding common medical conditions and physical therapy considerations. Furthermore, she has experience in reviewing, summarizing, and contributing to a number of physical therapy continuing education courses.
