Stroke Rehabilitation: Introduction, Evaluation, Treatment, and Research, 6/3/2024

About the Course:
Stroke is one of the most commonly seen diagnoses in hospitals, subacute, acute, outpatient centers and home health. No matter what sector of rehabilitation you currently work in, this course will help you develop a well-rounded understanding of CVA including background information, causes, effects of stroke based on location of occlusion, risk factors, medical management following stroke, procedures for evaluation and treatment, and research. The majority of the course covers functional limitations observed after a stroke. We will discuss how we can not only attempt to increase function for the patient, but also educate caregivers for optimal carry over. All in all, this course will help you be a better patient advocate, which is one of the best things we can do for our patients!

Course Objectives:
  1. Identify the definition and causes of a cerebral vascular accident (CVA)
  2. List the effects of CVA based on location of occlusion
  3. Identify medical management following CVA
  4. Recognize the evaluation and intervention procedures for clients who sustained a stroke
  5. Identify functional limitations commonly observed after stroke including mobility, communication, cognitive-behavioral impairments, upper extremity dysfunction, and visual impairment.
  6. Recognize various research studies to increase knowledge of CVA rehabilitation
About the Instructor:
Cynthia Diaz, OT, is a pediatric Occupational Therapist with a passion for pediatric and orthopedic care. Currently, she works as a school-based OT and enjoys furthering her education and knowledge through study, and implementing new interventions with students to help increase academic performance through enhancing visual perceptual skills, graphic communication, sensory integration techniques and more. Cynthia gets to use her skills in the pediatric realm on not only her students, but on her kiddos at home as well, all 4 of them! Prior to school based intervention, Cynthia worked for 7 years as a orthopedic occupational therapist. She is still extremely passionate about this arena of care and would like to one day become a Certified Hand Therapist.
