About the Course

Therapists have much to offer the wound care team, but many therapists do not feel adequate in assessing a wound, writing goals, or documenting. This is an Entry to Intermediate level course that outlines what a pressure injury is (and is not), how to assess a pressure injury, what factors may have caused and/or contribute to a pressure injury, and how to write an effective therapy plan of care for the treatment of a patient with a pressure injury.

  • Define up-to-date terminology to stage a Pressure Injury
  • Identify the components of a wound assessment
  • Recognize intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to pressure injuries
  • Recognize measurable goals
  • Identify and select therapeutic interventions specific to patients with a pressure injury
  • Recognize accurate and sufficient ICD-10 coding of a pressure injury
  • Identify key components of therapy documentation
  • Identify effective therapist involvement on a wound care team 

About the Author

Sandra Villam, a licensed Physical Therapist, received her Wound Care Certification from the National Alliance of Wound Care & Ostomy in 2012. She graduated in 1993 from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Sandra has worked primarily with the geriatric population, both in Skilled Nursing and Home Health. She became interested in wounds when in 2003 she attended an intense training in wound care and sharps debridement in order to qualify for her WA PT license. Living in a rural area of Washington she determined to become certified based on a need for expertise in treating complex wounds. Sandra enjoys teaching, sharing her knowledge, and enabling other healthcare professionals to feel confident in their skills.
