Addiction Medicine: When Patients Can’t “Just Quit”

About the Course:
This course will offer insight into the impact of substance use disorders in the United States and help pharmacy professionals identify patients suffering from these diseases. After completing this course, pharmacy professionals will understand the pharmacologic treatments for addiction to opioids, alcohol, and tobacco. The course will discuss the mechanisms, dosing, major side effects and drug interactions, and patient counseling points for these medications.

“This course will [partially] fulfill the DEA-mandated 8 hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders for DEA licensees renewing on or after June 27, 2023.”

Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Describe the economic and societal burdens created by addiction.
  • Identify patients presenting with opioid use disorder, alcohol use disorder or tobacco use disorder using the DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis.
  • List the various pharmacological therapies used during the withdrawal phase.
  • Compose a plan for incorporating naloxone pharmacist-consult agreements into practice.
  • Discuss the current FDA-approved therapies for opioid use disorder and determine the best treatment option based on recent guidelines and patient factors.
  • Compare and contrast the FDA-approved therapies for alcohol use disorder.
  • Assess a patient’s readiness to change and devise a plan for smoking cessation when needed.
  • Review the psychosocial interventions used in treating addiction.


About the Author:
Melanie Padgett, PharmD, earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Duquesne University. She has been a community pharmacist for seven years and has experience writing for medical education companies.  She has completed additional training in immunizations, pain management, and diabetes.

  • A minimum test score of 75 percent is needed to obtain a credit.
