General Principles of Toxicology: A Review for Pharmacists

About the Course:
Toxicology has been described in literature for thousands of years. In the year 1230, the word “poison” first appeared in the literature and was defined as a potion or draught that was prepared with deadly ingredients. Since then, poisons and toxicology have remained an important part of history. From intentional poisoning-related deaths to the significant increase in deaths related to drug abuse and overdose, toxicology remains a relevant topic in medicine today. This course will review general principles of toxicology as well as toxidromes and agents of toxicity. It includes specific discussion regarding antidotes and treating toxicologic emergencies with a focus on pharmacologic therapy.

Brittany Reed, PharmD is a critical care pharmacist currently practicing in the neuroscience intensive care unit. She attended West Virginia University for pharmacy school, where she graduated in 2014. Thereafter, she completed two years of residency, a PGY1 in pharmacy practice and a PGY2 in critical care. Both residency years were completed at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, WV. Professionally, she is also board certified in both pharmacotherapy and critical care.

- Select the most appropriate antidote for a patient presenting with overdose.
- Assess patient characteristics to determine the toxidrome for the presenting patient.
- Evaluate patient cases to recommend appropriate therapy for patients presenting with toxicological emergencies.
- Choose appropriate monitoring parameters to incorporate into treatment plans for overdose situations.
