Meets the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs requirement for implicit bias training.
Beginning on June 1, 2022, and for every renewal thereafter, an applicant for license or registration renewal must have completed a minimum of 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of the applicant's license or registration cycle.
About the Course
This introductory and multimedia webinar is appropriate for all healthcare professionals. The course consists of a 1 ½ hour lecture presentation on Implicit Biases in Everyday Life followed by a 30-minute Q&A period with an implicit bias expert. Implicit bias comes from the unconscious mind, and often consists of unintentional thoughts and behaviors that impact professional practice. This course focuses on interpreting bias lingo and provides examples of the dangers of implicit bias and how these may be harmful to the healthcare provider and patient.
This interactive 2-hour implicit bias training provides historical context of race and its relationship to the development of racial implicit bias. You will be presented with a self-assessment to gauge your understanding of the topic before and after the training, and will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions.
Per the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Public Health Code rule, this training is in addition to any continuing education requirements required for renewal. Please see our MI Implicit Bias FAQ page for more details.
- Interpret bias lingo
- Analyze terms by helping the learner understand what implicit biases are; the dangers of implicit bias; and how something that is unintended can be just as harmful as the intended.
- Examine the dangers of implicit bias.
- Illustrate strategies to interrupt biases in self and in others and begin to think about how interruption strategies might occur at the macro level as well
About the Author
Kimberly Norwood is the Henry H. Oberschelp Professor of Law at Washington University School of Law. Ms. Norwood completed her undergraduate work at Fordham University and obtained her J.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She worked in litigation at a law firm before joining the faculty. She teaches a wide range of courses, including a course on Implicit Bias, and has lectured all over the world, including in China, Greece, Japan, the Netherlands, Taiwan; and she was among the group of experts advising Starbucks on the company’s bias programming. Ms. Norwood is the principal partner in KJN Equity Consultants, LLC.
