About the Course:
This Medicinal Marijuana (Cannabis sativa) course includes coverage of recreational versus medicinal use, botanical background, cultural history, endocannabinoid system, FDA-approved cannabinoids, therapeutic uses, clinical research, federal and state marijuana laws, cannabis use disorder, nursing care/considerations for patients using medicinal marijuana.

Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Distinguish medicinal marijuana (Cannabis sativa) from recreational marijuana and the use of hemp.
  • Discuss the state of pharmaceutical drug development from the marijuana plant and its potential applications in behavioral health, nursing care, and medical treatment.
  • Summarize the state of the science concerning the best clinical research evidence for use of marijuana in the treatment of disease, including supportive and complementary care.
  • Identify the current status of legalization of marijuana for medicinal and recreational use and its impact on healthcare systems.
  • Review the emerging issues for community health and education related to marijuana use and the expansion of legalization/decriminalization for medicinal and recreational purposes.
About the Author:
Martha Mathews Libster, PhD, MSN, APRN-CNS, APHN-BC, received her Bachelor of Science in Education from New York University, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles, her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and her doctorate in Humanities - Health Care History from Oxford Brooks University in Oxford, England. Dr. Libster is an award-winning historian of seven books including two histories about American 19th century healthcare reform, religion, and nursing. She is known internationally for her pioneering work and book publications on integrative nursing and nurse-herbalism beginning with the release of Demonstrating Care: The Art of Integrative Nursing (2000, Delmar Thomson Learning) and her encyclopedic Integrative Herb Guide for Nurses (2002). She is founding director of the Global Tea House, an international forum for dialogue in health culture diplomacy, and editor of Perspectives in Cultural Diplomacy. Her work focuses on primary health care, education, and research with communities that seek to incorporate nonpharmacological, cost-effective, accessible traditional healing solutions, such as traditional Chinese and Western herbal remedies, with emerging science in their approach to stress, mental illness, and common health concerns particularly in infants and young children. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society in Nursing, the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, and is on the American Botanical Council Advisory Board.

How to receive credit:
  • A minimum test score of 75 percent is needed to obtain a credit.
