About the Course  
The COVID-19 pandemic made all healthcare workers acutely aware of infection prevention and control measures. The pandemic has highlighted the need for ongoing education to maintain a knowledge and skill level appropriate for implementing strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections and to prepare for the next pandemic. Understanding where reservoirs are harboring pathogens and strategies to prevent transmission in healthcare settings is critical. This course will examine best practices for infection prevention, such as hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, transmission-based precautions, cleaning and disinfection, and injection safety.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Examine the essentials of infection prevention to prevent harm to patients and healthcare workers.  
  • Recognize risks that should be avoided to prevent transmission of infections.  
  • Examine when hand hygiene must be performed.  
  • Distinguish how organisms are spread so that the appropriate precaution type can be implemented.  
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role the environment plays in infection prevention in healthcare settings.
  • Recognize best practices to prevent injection-related infections. 


About the Author 
Kelley O’Leary is a registered nurse with a master’s degree in community health nursing from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She is an infection preventionist (IP) with over 20 years’ experience. She has worked in both clinical and public health settings. Kelley has been an educator throughout her career and has specific teaching experience in a nursing program at a community college. Kelley has done several presentations on infection prevention for a wide variety of groups. Her latest work project is implementing a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) national training collaborative focused on infection prevention and control. She is a member of the Alaska and Hawaii Association for Professionals in Infection Control and has been certified in infection control since 2005. She lives in Keaau, Hawaii, with her husband and two Rottweiler dogs.   

How to Receive Credit  

  • Read the entire course online or in print. 
  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.  
  • Note to Nursing professionals: Depending on your state requirements, you will be asked to either affirm that you have completed the course, or you will be required to complete the Post-test included in the course.
  • Provide required personal information and payment information.
  • Complete the mandatory course evaluation.
  • Print your Certificate of Completion.
