About the Course  
Anxiety disorders are the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorders, with an estimated 264 million persons globally suffering from an anxiety disorder. It’s estimated that 19.1% of adults in the United States (U.S.) are affected by at least one anxiety disorder; this number increases to 31.9% in U.S. adolescents. Common anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), specific phobias, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder (SAD), and separation anxiety disorder. This course reviews the diagnosis and pharmacological management of anxiety disorders, as well as medications which can cause or exacerbate anxiety symptoms.

  • Differentiate characteristics and DSM-V diagnostic criteria for specific anxiety disorders.  
  • Compare and contrast pharmacologic options for the treatment of anxiety disorders with regard to pharmacologic properties and place in therapy.  

Pharmacists Technicians:

  • Recognize medications associated with causing or exacerbating anxiety symptoms. 
  • Describe characteristics for specific anxiety disorders.
     

About the Author/Presenter  
Alex Brewer, PharmD, is a licensed pharmacist and medical writer. Dr. Brewer received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. After graduation, he stayed with the University of Kentucky for a one-year pharmacy residency with emphasis in community pharmacy and geriatrics. Upon completing residency, he worked in the managed care field, conducting medication therapy management and adherence counseling sessions with Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance patients, before transitioning to a career in medical writing. In addition to his work as a medical writer, Dr. Brewer also works in private practice helping patients with comprehensive weight loss and exercise programs coupled with chronic disease management and medication therapy management.

  • Read the entire course online or in print which requires a 2-hour commitment of time. 
  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination.  A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
