About the Course:
Florida has become the center of the prescription drug abuse crisis. This course will discuss the new Florida laws regarding the dispensing of controlled substances and the role the pharmacist plays in ensuring the validity of prescriptions.

Learning objectives: 
After completing this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Review the role of opioids in the treatment of pain.
  • Describe the new Florida laws regarding the dispensing of controlled substances.
  • Demonstrate methods to ensure patients with valid prescriptions will have access to controlled substances.
  • Discuss the use of a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).
  • Assess the therapeutic value of a controlled substance prescription.
  • Describe how to detect prescriptions not issued for a legitimate medical purpose.
  • Recall prescribing and dispensing controlled substance laws and rules.

About the Author
Jodi Dreiling, PharmD, BCPS, is a Pharmacotherapy Specialist at Akron General Medical Center in Ohio. She has also served in both staff pharmacist and critical care clinical coordinator positions throughout her career. She has authored and co-authored numerous publications, including certification exams for pharmacy technicians, as well as has written research abstracts and bulletins within the pharmaceutical industry.  She graduated from Ohio Northern University’s College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy with Distinction in 2000. 

How to receive credit:

  • A minimum test score of 75 percent is needed to obtain a credit
