About the Course
This course will provide the evidence-based research to support why interdisciplinary treatment practices are clinically beneficial to the client, for improved clinical outcomes. For example, t significant research will be shared regarding the successful outcomes when physical activity tasks are offered simultaneously with cognitive tasks. Such Dual tasks are shown to produce greater outcomes than with single tasks, offered by a single discipline. Multiple sources of evidence will be cited to support the concept of challenging and teaching language, and cognition while performing physical tasks.

Learning Outcomes
  • List definitions of treatment types and the respective joint guidelines by AOTA, APTA, & ASHA.
  • Identify when it is clinically appropriate for SLP and PT to co-treat.
  • Identify the basic neuroanatomy associated with neuroplasticity.
  • Recognize brain plasticity and its role in motor learning.
  • Identify the effect of Physical Activity on brain function.
  • List evidence-based examples of dual task training for improved outcomes.
  • Recognize how utilizing interdisciplinary teamwork between the OT, PT and SLP disciplines may affect outcomes.
  • Identify case examples of successful client outcomes resulting from SLP/PT co-treatment interventions
About the Author
Lisa Milliken, MA, CCC-SLP has 30 years of practice in healthcare, to include serving as a manager, vice president, consultant, compliance and education director and mentor to professionals in the post-acute settings. She has served as the LSHA Board President and was a member of the Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP) and now serves on the TSHA Executive Council as Chair of the Business Management Committee and is a member of the TSHA Medical Committee. Her clinical specialties include dysphagia and dementia management and she is also a recognized speaker/teacher in the areas of Medicare Regulatory affairs, documentation, denials/appeals, healthcare leadership, cardiopulmonary disorders and research in successful aging. Lisa serves as the TX State Advocate Medicare Policy (StAMP) Representative and has presented over 100 courses at the state, regional and national levels. She currently provides education support to over 700 Healthcare sites nationwide as Education Director for Select Rehabilitation.
