Course Overview
Over the next decade, we will see an increase in the number of seniors, relative to other demographics. In order to provide the greatest care, have pertinent perspective, and minimize any implicit bias, it’s important for healthcare professionals to understand this population. This course will provide insight, current information, and suggestions to working, treating, and interacting with an aging population in an appropriate way.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Identify the senior U.S. attributes.
- Identify major disease impact on aging.
- Recognize diversity within aging population.
- Identify activities of daily living (ADLs) and impact on aging.
- Recognize successful aging components.
- Identify specific choices for types of senior living options.
- Recognize different housing choices based on ADLs and personal choice.
- Identify different aspects of community living and levels of service.
- Identify significant points of aging that can impact transitions.
- Recognize capacity and successful aging.
- Identify aspects of community that are aging-friendly.
- Recognize impact of social connectedness on successful aging.
- Recognize caregiver roles, impact, and potential outcomes.
About the Author/Presenter
Joy Siegel, EdD, MBA is a Cultural Gerontologist and founder of Senior Solutions, Inc., providing research and investigative support to universities and national funders specializing in senior issues. Joy is also a partner in the Elder Resource Group, providing comprehensive life planning solutions and direct service support to seniors and their families. She holds a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership and is a certified Gerontologist, as well as an MBA in Nonprofit Management. Joy has worked with numerous nonprofits serving the senior population, including dozens of senior centers and programs.
Dr. Siegel is the creator of the Dare to Share Loneliness minimization project, sponsored by the Batchelor, designed to encourage seniors experiencing loneliness to obtain support necessary to overcome this feeling and improve their quality of life.
Joy Siegel Senior Solutions, Inc, provides comprehensive services enabling clients and their families to achieve maximum quality of life. Services include assistance obtaining benefits and available social services, financial planning and asset protection, transitions with living accommodations, and enhanced communication skills for adult children and aging parents. On a personal note, Joy was a caregiver for her mother who battled Parkinson’s disease, an experience that motivated her to delve even further into the field of Geriatrics.
Dr. Siegel is passionate about working directly with seniors and their families, as well as collaborating with other service providers to ensure that comprehensive needs are met for each client and their support system.
