About the Course:
Contemporary Manual Therapy is all about integrating a variety of hands-on techniques with Pain Science Education as part of the BPS model. Therapists need evidence-based clinical reasoning skills and a comprehensive evaluation approach to determine the best treatment plan for each individual patient and their specific concerns and expectations. This course teaches a step-by-step model — from intake to final assessment — to make sure that every aspect of the patient’s condition has been reviewed. This course covers the hip, knee and ankle/foot, as well as screening of the lumbar spine and pelvic girdle. Topics include Pain Science Education, Cupping & IASTM, joint mobilizations, the BPS model, exercise therapy, and how to bridge the gap between rehab and fitness. This course is ideal for therapists and athletic trainers that want to enhance their manual skills to help their patients with pain in the lower body. This course expounds on a variety of treatment techniques and uses extensive videos for demonstration. Get comfortable treating the entire lower quadrant.

Course Objectives:
  1. Identify indications and contraindications for manual therapy, including mobilization/manipulation, IASTM and cupping.
  2. Identify appropriate components of a complete orthopedic evaluation of the lower body.
  3. Recognize comprehensive, integrated manual therapy treatments for most common movement disorders in the Lower body.
  4. Recognize benefits of including pain science education and BPS model for a holistic treatment approach.
  5. Recognize the effects of IASTM and Cupping, based on our understanding of the effects of this type of treatments.
  6. Select treatment that integrate IASTM and cupping with active movement to improve mobility and function of the Lower Body.
  7. Recognize proper progressions of introductory tool/cupping techniques to more advanced movement-based techniques.
  8. Recognize difference in restrictions between joint restrictions and soft tissue restrictions and the appropriate manual therapy techniques for each.
  9. Identify when joint mobilization techniques are indicated and how these techniques reduce pain.
  10. Select appropriate exercises and appropriate programming for patients in pain.
  11. Identify patient’s drivers of pain and disability.
About the Instructor:
Pieter L. de Smidt, PT, DPT, MDT, MTC has over 30 years of experience as a Physical Therapist. He has achieved certifications in McKenzie Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, Manual Therapy, and Sports Therapy. With his Post- Professional Doctorate in PT he specialized in management of musculoskeletal injuries of the spine & extremities. He passionate about combining hands-on treatment with pain science education. Pieter L. de Smidt practices in his own clinic, “Reset-Wellness Physical Therapy & Medical Fitness”, in Houston, TX. He uses an evidence-based, integrated approach of manual therapy & exercise. The main focus for his practice is to bridge the gap between rehab and fitness by improving patient’s lifestyle choices through education and to incorporate strength & conditioning principles into physical therapy treatments.
