About the Course
This course is ideal for therapists and athletic trainers who want to enhance their manual skills to help their patients with pain in the upper body. A variety of treatment techniques are expounded upon with the use of extensive videos for demonstration. Get comfortable treating the thoracic region, the shoulder, the elbow, and the wrist/hand.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify appropriate components of a complete orthopedic evaluation of the upper body.
  • Recognize comprehensive, integrated manual therapy treatments for most common movement disorders in the upper body.
  • Recognize benefits of including pain science education and BPS model for a holistic treatment approach.
  • Identify patient’s drivers of pain and disability.
  • Identify indications and contraindications for manual therapy, including mobilization/manipulation, IASTM and cupping.
  • Recognize the effects of IASTM and Cupping, based on our understanding of the effects of this type of treatments.
  • Select treatment that integrate IASTM and cupping with active movement to improve mobility and function of the upper body.
  • Recognize proper progressions of introductory tool/cupping techniques to more advanced movement-based techniques.
  • Recognize difference in restrictions between joint restrictions and soft tissue restrictions and the appropriate manual therapy techniques for each.
  • Identify when joint mobilization techniques are indicated and how these techniques reduce pain.
  • 1elect appropriate exercises and appropriate programming for patients in pain.

About the Author
Pieter L. de Smidt has over 30 years of experience as a Physical Therapist. He has achieved certifications in Mckenzie Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, Manual Therapy, and Sports Therapy. With his Post- Professional Doctorate in PT he specialized in management of musculoskeletal injuries of the spine & extremities. He is passionate about combining hands-on treatment with pain science education. Pieter L. de Smidt practices in his own clinic, “Reset-Wellness Physical Therapy & Medical Fitness”, in Houston, TX. He uses an evidence-based, integrated approach of manual therapy & exercise. The main focus for his practice is to bridge the gap between rehab and fitness by improving patient’s lifestyle choices through education and to incorporate strength & conditioning principles into physical therapy treatments.
