About the Course:
As adults are living longer, back pain is inevitable. Degeneration starts at an early age, due to one-sided, repetitive activities creating muscles imbalances. This program will give you insight and understanding into some of the physical changes that occur in the spines of aging adults. We will review pathology, as well introduce safe posture/core exercises. Learn to implement these exercises that are flexion free, as well as how to modified, based on abilities of their patients.

Course Objectives:
  1. Identify and understand common degenerative spine conditions affecting older adults
  2. Identify goals of exercise when working with an aging spine
  3. Identify safe exercises for all degenerative spine conditions
  4. Identify and understand neutral spine, when and when not to apply
  5. Recognize pelvic stability, necessity for all other exercises
  6. Identify safe abdominal exercises, without flexion to strengthen trunk muscles
  7. Identify Appropriate core exercises to stabilize aging spines
  8. Identify safe everyday activities with asymmetrical loading
  9. Identify safe stretches, with upright spines to encourage stability 
About the Author:
SHARI KALKSTEIN, PTA, NSCA/CSCS, ACSm-HFS, ACE/CPT, ACE/AHFS, is a Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer with over 20 years of experience. Ms. Kalkstein is the owner/president of Fortify Your Frame, Inc., a studio based personal training business concentrating on improving function with older adults. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Texas at Arlington and an Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapy Assisting from Broward Community College. As an experienced physical therapist assistant and personal trainer, Ms. Kalkstein offers a comprehensive and unique understanding of the aging adult and effective programs that will strengthen the whole body to help increase functional abilities. Her wealth of knowledge and practical “field” experience make her an informative instructor. She brings passion, enthusiasm, and innovative ideas to her presentations and keeps the day moving with hands-on activities.
