About the Course:
This course is designed for the rehabilitation clinician to move beyond static imaging to utilizing active and passive movements to identify patterns. After a pattern has been identified, the clinician will perform passive assessment techniques to confirm the suspected tissue impairment. Once the tissue impairment has been confirmed, specific interventions including patient education, manual therapy, and home exercises can be utilized to restore function while decreasing symptoms.

Course Objectives:
  1. Identify potential causes of back pain
  2. Understand relevant anatomical structures
  3. Identify signs/symptoms that would need referred
  4. Understand potential cause of signs/symptoms
  5. Recognize active and passive movement screens
  6. Recognize tissue involved with limited AROM vs PROM
  7. Recognize compensation s for surrounding joints
  8. Recognize patterns during AROM
  9. Select additional tests to confirm impairment
  10. Select evidence-based interventions for specific patterns
  11. Select home exercises to re-enforce clinical interventions 
About the Author:
Steve Middleton, PT, DPT, MS, ATC, CSCS, CES, CKTP, FMT, serves as the Program Director for the Athletic Training Education Program at William Woods University as well as Clinic Director at Assess, Treat and Condition, an outpatient clinic in Fulton, MO. He has nearly 20 years of experience in patient care. Dr. Middleton has also worked with athletes, from high school to college as well as professional athletes in the NFL and the Olympics. He has instructed thousands of clinicians in continuing education courses over the past 8 years. His treatment and teaching approach is very hands-on, from performing manual therapy techniques to therapeutic exercises to improve function while decreasing symptoms Dr. Middleton earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of St Augustine for Health Sciences with an emphasis in manual physical therapy. He also holds a Master of Science in Exercise Science & Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Southern Illinois University. In addition to his academic degrees, he holds additional certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the National Strength & Conditioning Association, the International Kinesio Taping Association, and Graston Technique. Steve Middleton is certified in Fascial Movement Taping (FMT) and has become a foremost authority in the field integrating a variety of manual therapy techniques.
