Medical Errors and Physician Burnout

30
About the Course:
The purpose of this course is to educate physicians about the prevalence and nature of medical errors with a specific focus on the role that clinician burnout may play in the occurrence of such errors. The course will cover factors that increase risk for burnout, and factors that can mitigate or reduce that risk. The course reviews the multi-factorial nature of burnout, examining contributory causes at the level of individual physicians and at higher systems levels, such as the ways that technology can either exacerbate, or reduce, the experience of burnout and, thus, potentially impact rates of medical errors.

Learning Objectives:
Completion of this course will better enable the course participant to:
  • Describe the prevalence of medical errors and factors that contribute to an increased risk that such errors will occur.
  • Explain at least three factors that can increase risk of physician emotional distress, and three factors that can mitigate or reduce risk of emotional distress.
  • Identify technology-related factors related to physician emotional distress and strategies for addressing those factors.
  • Describe interventions that physicians can engage in to improve resilience and wellness and reduce the risk of emotional distress.
