Maine Hospital Takes ‘Positive Steps’ Toward Staffing

Houlton Regional Hospital in Houlton, ME, currently has openings for a registered physical therapist and physical therapist assistant.

The Positive Steps outpatient rehabilitation program, a service of Houlton Regional Hospital, was recently moved to a separate location from the regular hospital in order to better meet the needs of this growing suburban community. Currently, Positive Steps staffs three full-time PTs, a PTA and an aide.

The rehab program was part of Houlton since its doors opened in 1976, before moving off-site last fall. Aggressive program development has necessitated adding to the current staff. Houlton has many exciting features to offer prospective employees, both professionally and personally.

The town of Houlton borders Canada and offers ample opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts such as skiing, hunting, fishing and hiking. For those interested in furthering their education, Houlton has sophisticated teleconferencing opportunities including satellite education. Financial incentives are offered for those who gain certification, and PTs are afforded the opportunity annually to submit their preferences for conference attendance. Finally, Maine boasts a large number of strong, supportive state physical therapy groups.

A comprehensive benefits package is available for employees, including medical and dental insurance with co-pay, three weeks’ vacation with almost another two weeks in holiday time, and sick time when necessary.

“The rehabilitation team is strongly emphasized,” said Nancy Mooers, co-manager of the outpatient services at Positive Steps and manager of inpatient (acute and skilled) physical, occupational and speech therapy services. “Our PT, OT and speech teams share the work space, and enjoy a friendly working relationship.”

As a community leader and the largest employer in Houlton, Positive Steps takes pride in offering competitive wages and benefits in addition to sign-on bonuses in certain areas.

Positive Steps is JCAHO-accredited and state licensed.
