Description

Our current geriatric population is growing at an alarming rate of nearly 3% annually.
Current estimates project 52 million by 2020 and 66 million by 2030. This population is at
the greatest risk for falls due to age-related physiological changes and chronic health
problems. Incorporating functional activities and therapeutic exercise into your patient’s
treatment plans is more important than ever. Recent reports reveal that 75% of the
geriatric population is sedentary – despite evidence indicating the significant impact of
exercise for the treatment of balance disorders, biological changes, common aging conditions, pain management, as well as its substantial effect on injury prevention.

This innovative, evidence-based 1-day workshop presents functional exercise interventions
specific to your patient’s unique pain, mobility, disorders, and physiologic changes to the musculoskeletal system through aging. Utilizing hands-on demos & interactive labs,
participants will discover new methods to safely break down movement in the aging
population for injury prevention, as well as post-injury progression. You will thoroughly
examine methodologies that have proved effective for geriatric patients and take an in-
depth look at proper progressions to assist with functional mobility, and tools to
appropriately perform individualized movement assessments.

You will return to your clinic with immediately implementable “TherEX” interventions for this fast-growing population. You will learn hands-on methods and interventions that are outcome based and are effective in making a difference for even the most difficult geriatric patient. From dementia to orthopedic problems, to the frail elderly, this course will help you understand how to assess the individual, and then help them progress and accomplish their goals. Being able to safely complete meaningful tasks is at the heart of patient compliance. Thus, having personally tailored exercises and interventions at your fingertips will help you get results at your very next treatment session.

Objectives

  1. Explain the physiologic changes to the musculoskeletal system through aging.
  2. Determine individualized and appropriate exercise modalities for each patient.
  3. Establish appropriate methods for comprehensive balance and fall risk assessments.
  4. Implement safe and progressive exercise plans of action for post-injury and injury prevention.
  5. Develop therapeutic exercise interventions for unique needs, capabilities and
    common conditions in aging.
  6. Discuss various gait dysfunctions and proper use of gait velocity assessments.
