National COPD Awareness Month: COPD Foundation Announces Lineup of Community Awareness and Prevention Activities

BUSINESS WIRE — The COPD Foundation (COPDF) announced today a lineup of key community events during National COPD Awareness Month this November, including the launch of its Employer Tool Kit, the Great American Screen Off and Virtual Voices: a World COPD Day Call to Action.

“As part of our ongoing awareness campaign, the COPDF is spreading the message about the urgency of involving our elected officials in the fight against COPD, the importance of being screened for COPD , and how companies can mitigate the costly effects of COPD on the nation’s workforce, ” says John Walsh, president and co-founder of the COPD Foundation. “Our goal is to educate all Americans about this debilitating-and preventable-disease.”

World COPD Day, Nov. 14, 2012:

  • The Great American Screen Off encourages people to take the COPD Risk Screener to determine their risk for COPD.
  • COPDF asks the COPD community to participate in Virtual Voices: a World COPD Day Call to Action by sending letters to elected officials throughout the day to ensure that state policy makers are aware of the impact of COPD.

Nov. 20, 2012:

  • The official launch of the COPD Employer Tool Kit will take place at 12 p.m., Lawyers Mall, 100 State Circle, Annapolis, M.D. The Tool Kit is designed to help employers understand more about COPD’s impact on their workforce and what they can do to lower costs and improve health. Recently, the Tool Kit online portal was launched to employers at the National Business Coalition on Health’s (NBCH) Annual Conference.

“Identifying the millions of individuals living with COPD is only the beginning,” Walsh adds. “Our efforts are about the potential we see for improving the health of individuals, communities and the nation one breath at a time.”
