About the Course
This course serves as an overview of the most common basic non-life-threatening rhythms. It is intended for nurses and other health care professionals who have an understanding of cardiac structure and function, the basic features of the cardiac cycle, and ECG waveforms.
Learning Objectives
• Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to do the following:
• Describe the information attainable from the electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor.
• Discuss the healthcare professional’s role in rhythm monitoring.
• Recognize normal rhythms, paced rhythms, and basic dysrhythmias on the ECG monitor.
• Discuss the mechanisms of basic dysrhythmias.
• List appropriate healthcare interventions based on accurate identification of common dysrhythmias.
About the Author
Dawn Altman is an expert cardiology nurse instructor who has been educating nurses and other health care providers in ECG interpretation for over 35 years. After an extensive career as an emergency department nurse and paramedic clinical instructor, she worked in a large full-service cardiac hospital. In 1986, she authored an ECG textbook (under the name Dawn Bean). She currently administers free web-based teaching materials for other ECG instructors.

• Answer the final examination questions at the end of the course. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
