About the Course:
This general knowledge course is designed to educate healthcare professionals about caring for the LGBTQIA+ community. The target audience for this course includes all health professionals and contains examples and case studies from a variety of professions. The course is written at a moderate level of difficulty. Active engagement with this course will provide participants with a strong foundation for providing inclusive healthcare to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Course Objectives:
After completing this course, the learner should be able to:
1. Define common terminology used within the LGBTQIA+ community;
2. Identify challenges and safety concerns encountered by LGBTQIA+ patients seeking medical care
3. Distinguish between providing standard medical care and affirming medical care;
4. Name medical interventions common to patients within the LGBTQIA+ community;
5. Identify opportunities within a variety of health professions to create a more inclusive, patient-centered approach.
About the Instructor:
Gabrielle Davis, MA, MPH, LPC, NCC, RRT, RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS, CTTS, CHES is a respiratory therapist and licensed professional counselor in Boise, Idaho. Gabrielle holds dual roles as COPD Educator Nicotine Cessation Program Coordinator and Licensed Professional Counselor. She received a master of public health degree from Grand Canyon University and a master of arts in counseling degree from Boise State University. Gabrielle has been a licensed and registered respiratory therapist for 12 years, holding positions in major medical centers in metro Detroit and Chicago before relocating to Boise. She serves in many volunteer positions including President and Safe(r) Spaces Training Chair of the Idaho Association of LGBT Issues in Counseling (IALGBTIC) and Chair of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) Diversity and Inclusion Committee, among others. Gabrielle is also the coordinator for the Youth Alliance for Diversity, which is the longest-running LGBTQIA+ youth support and social group in Idaho.
