Pain Management and Opioid Use for New Jersey Healthcare Professionals

About the Course
It is critical that all healthcare professionals such as social workers have an understanding of pain management and the potential risks and benefits of using opioid pain medication for its treatment. This course is intended to provide healthcare professionals such as social workers engaged in practice settings that prescribe opioids with an accredited continuing education course designed to satisfy the specific state of New Jersey continuing education requirements and provide an overview of the clinical use of opioids.

Learning Objectives 
  • State the required frequency of controlled substance inventories.
  • Provide an overview of controlled substance recordkeeping.
  • Explain the concept of a controlled substance closed system.
  • Identify two traits sometimes associated with drug diversion by a healthcare professional.
  • Provide an example of an action required by an institution following the identification of employee diversion.
  • Suggest one potential benefit that may arise from the identification of institutional diversion.
  • Describe a negative consequence associated with the improper disposal of controlled substances.
  • Note one key step in the treatment of addiction.

About the Author
Oren Shtayermman, MSW, Ph.D., LICSW
Dr. Shtayermman earned his BSW in Social Work from Haifa University, Israel, his MSW in Social Work from New York University and his PhD from Fordham University in New York City. Dr. Shtayermman conducted research focused on risk factors for suicidal ideation among adolescents and young adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). He is a regular contributor of book reviews in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. Since 2002, he has been conducting both qualitative and quantitative research and has collaborated regularly with health professions to strengthen the presence of the Social Work Profession in a cross-disciplinary environment. In the past two decades, Dr. Shtayermman held various positions in both public and private academic institutes as a full time faculty and as an administrator.
