Optimizing Care for Patients with COPD: Every Breath Counts
Course Overview
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity in the geriatric population and a frequent contributor to hospital admissions, readmissions, and long-term disability. This continuing education course is designed for licensed healthcare providers who work with patients across the continuum of care: acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, outpatient, and home health settings.
The course provides an intermediate-level review of COPD management, emphasizing the integration of medical and rehabilitative perspectives. Participants will explore the pathophysiology, diagnostic tools, and evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches used in the care of individuals with COPD. Special attention will be given to the role of rehabilitation professionals in acute management, patient and family education, and strategies for long-term disease management. Through case-based learning, participants will apply key concepts to realistic clinical scenarios, enhancing their ability to make informed, patient-centered decisions and collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Analyze the pathophysiology and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including the impact on pulmonary function and gas exchange.
- Assess common evidence-based clinical measures used to evaluate functional status in individuals with COPD.
- Apply treatment techniques to optimize respiratory function, mobility, and overall quality of life in patients with COPD.
- Integrate principles of patient and caregiver education to promote self-management, adherence to therapy, and reduction of hospital readmissions.
About the Author/Presenter
Dr. Suzanne Greenwalt has been a practicing physical therapist since 2002, working across acute care, outpatient, and skilled nursing settings. A board-certified cardiovascular and pulmonary clinical specialist, the first physical therapist in Tennessee to earn this distinction, Dr. Greenwalt is also a geriatric clinical specialist. Her clinical interests include the management of cardiopulmonary conditions, geriatric rehabilitation, and inpatient care.
Dr. Greenwalt joined the faculty at Belmont University in 2013, where she teaches cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy, pharmacotherapeutics, and clinical education. She has also led interprofessional education initiatives and contributed to admissions, curriculum design, and program leadership. In 2024, she was appointed chair of the School of Physical Therapy at Belmont University.
