Orthopedic Tests for Massage Therapists

For injured clients seeking relief from their pain and movement dysfunctions, a quality massage therapist should seek short- and long-term solutions. This requires knowing what tissues are at fault and how. While this may seem simple and obvious (for example, pain in the neck is due to some neck muscle dysfunction) precisely pinpointing the causes of pain and dysfunction can be more complex. While it may not always be possible to know exactly what tissues are primarily at fault, there are many tests for soft tissue and joint injuries that therapists can conduct prior to (or even during) the massage treatment. Commonly referred to as “orthopedic tests,” these are assessments that test for skeletomuscular injuries and help sort out whether an injury is functional (muscular) or structural (skeletal) in nature.

Corrective Exercise: Optimize the Nervous System for Complete Functional Restoration
Corrective Exercise: Optimize the Nervous System for Complete Functional Restoration

About the Course
The Central Nervous System (CNS) is our communication network, one that can change and adapt at any age, and it is imperative to address impairments, lifestyle, and somatosensory factors for optimal neural reprogramming. We need to reprogram the CNS for complete functional restoration, optimal performance, and most importantly, injury prevention. The brain’s control center is dependent on the proper input. When dysfunction exists, the CNS receives poor proprioceptive input and accesses inefficient information. By addressing the dysfunctional movement at their root in the motor control center, where the patterns are stored, we can truly enhance motor learning and optimize client outcomes. Furthermore, a scientific and systematic approach to retraining the nervous system encompassing appropriate corrective strategies and sound movement-based training will contribute to fast and effective changes in motor control. This course discusses corrective exercises, which are those exercises done by an individual in order to reprogram the neuromuscular system from dysfunctional, to functional movement. These exercises are used to relieve pain, rehabilitate injury, and prevent injury. Everyone has their own story and has developed their own compensations over time, which is why corrective exercise is individualized.

Evidenced-Inspired Approaches to Pelvic Pain
Evidenced-Inspired Approaches to Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain can be a chronic, debilitating condition that is affecting an ever increasing number of individuals. Individuals often have numerous imaging studies that are considered normal and do not contribute to their treatment. Current medical treatment involves prescription pain relievers, injections and surgeries that often offer little if any improvement in symptoms. This course is designed to educate the practicing clinician on how to rule out suspected medical red flags. The clinician will then learn researched based evaluation techniques to identify not only the presence of sacroiliac joint dysfunction but the specific dysfunction of the 10 common presentations. Tissue specific impairments will then be addressed with a variety of manual therapy techniques including instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, muscle energy techniques, and joint manipulations.

Foundation, Form and Function: Foundation Concepts of Core Stability
Foundation, Form and Function: Foundation Concepts of Core Stability

Core stability is the new trend in the Rehab and Sports Industry but what is the actual core according to the new evidence? What are the anatomical integrations of muscle, fascia, neural and the emotional components that are involved in efficient trunk stability? Why are our patients tight, stiff or collapsing? This seminar is heavily evidence based on the latest studies of the trunk, core, global muscle group and the intimate association of the respiratory system. Being able to differentiate proper core facilitation from global muscle overuse is essential in accurate core training.
The Thorax is the center of trunk rotation and is important in transferring loads from the lower extremities and upper extremities through the various regions of the spine. It is a prime base for muscle and fascial connections that affect the cervical and lumbo/pelvic regions. The diaphragm within the Thorax, functions in posture and respiration. It’s intimate connections, muscularly and neurologically with the lumbar spine, abdominals and pelvic floor and its ability to maintain intra abdominal pressure, are vital for spinal stability. Discover how to evaluate short, toned global muscles and weak deep core muscles. Learn to lengthen these excessively overused muscles. Be trained to facilitate the deep core and blend it with the global system for a strong dual system to allow our patients to stand correctly against gravity, our biggest adversary. Our patients must have a good foundation, good form, good function and ultimately enjoyment in their activities of life. “Foundation, Form and Function” will be an adjunct for any spinal health and stabilization platform. It is vital that the thorax and diaphragm function be integrated into a functional spinal program for successful outcomes.

Myofascial Release Clinical Applications – Lower Body
Myofascial Release Clinical Applications – Lower Body

Therapists are often presented with the challenging task of deciphering sometimes vague symptoms associated with chronic pain, symptoms which don’t always display expected dermotomal or myotomal patterns. Patients sometimes complain of stiffness or pain accompanied by tension in areas of their bodies not closely associated with the area of the actual injury. It is possible that these patients are suffering from myofascial dysfunction, which cannot be detected by MRIs, xrays or standard methods of examination. In such cases, myofascial pain is best diagnosed by an experienced manual therapy practioner, someone familiar in the use of motion testing and postural analysis. This course uses in depth demonstrative video, as well as detailed images for enhanced learning to ensure therapists learn to identify functions, structures and biomechanics of fascia. Therapists are taught technique concepts, special tests, and objective measures in the treatment of myofascial pain as well as indications and contraindications/precautions for myofascial release. Topics also covered include skin glides, skin rolling, crosshand and laminar releases, muscle play, traction circular and Z-friction as well as acupuncture meridians.

Pain Science Education for Manual Therapists: Video
Pain Science Education for Manual Therapists: Video

About the Course
Should pain science education be a hands-off approach? Some believe because there is limited research supporting the use of manual therapy, there is no need for hands-on treatment.
However, manual therapy is a great pain management technique, especially if applied with a bio- psycho-social approach. This course explains how manual therapy and pain science education are not mutually exclusive, but rather, are a great complement to each other. Three different classifications of pain are discussed as well as how manual therapy can be incorporated to treat these types of patient presentations. Understanding what type of pain is most dominant for your patient will direct your treatment plan.

And sometimes the scar tissue doesn’t heal properly which can cause chronic inflammation, fibroplasia and scar formation just won’t quit! Triple check!! Wound healing is a complex, regulated process in which regulated collagen deposition, in response to tissue injury, results in scar formation. Many chronic wounds are the result of chronic inflammation. The lymphatic system is charged with processing inflammation. Why can’t or won’t the system do its job? And how do we, as manual therapists, tackle the edema and scar tissue? The Scars and Inflammation course will take a look at the wound healing process and the most recent research that stretches across several disciplines to give us the critical thinking wisdom to create a sound, client centered plan of treatment.
