FAQs
California requires 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal cycle for RNs, LVNs, APNs, and Psychiatric Technicians. All 30 hours can be elective topics of your choosing.
For general renewals, California does not require specific mandatory CE topics. However, first-time renewals (within the first 2 years of licensure) require 1 hour of Implicit Bias training per AB 1407, effective January 1, 2023. APNs with Schedule II furnishing privileges need an additional 3-hour CE course.
Yes. California has no online limitations for nursing continuing education. All 30 hours can be completed through Board-approved online CE providers, including independent and home study courses.
California nursing licenses renew every 2 years based on your individual birth month, so expiration dates vary by nurse. Check your license status on the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) website at rn.ca.gov to confirm your specific expiration date and ensure all 30 CE hours are completed before it.
Both California LVNs and RNs need the same 30 contact hours per renewal cycle. However, LVN courses must be approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), while RN courses must be approved by the BRN. Make sure you’re taking courses approved for your specific license type.
The California BRN conducts random CE audits. If audited, you must provide certificates of completion for all 30 required hours. Keep your CE records for at least 4 years. Failure to produce documentation may result in disciplinary action, including fines or license suspension.
California APNs need 30 hours total, plus a 3-hour course for Schedule II furnishing authority. Those registered with the DEA must also complete a one-time 8-hour MATE Act training on opioid and substance use disorder treatment and management.
