About the Course
According to the results of the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 20.3 million people aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder related to alcohol or illicit drugs in the past year, including 14.8 million people who had an alcohol use disorder and 8.1 million who had an illicit drug disorder (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2018).
This basic, introductory course will provide an overview of the role of occupational therapy and physical therapy practitioners including theoretical frameworks to guide evaluation and intervention for individuals with a history of substance use.  As occupational and physical therapists, we are in a unique position to offer a holistic approach to recovery for enhanced occupational participation/engagement, discovering purpose, and optimal well-being. Recovery can be defined as “a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential” (SAMHSA, 2020). 

Learning Objectives 

  • Describe current definitions and DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorders.
  • Recognize how substance use impacts functionality, including activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), psychosocial skills, cognition, and functional mobility.
  • Identify substance use disorder as a primary and as a secondary diagnosis for individuals working with OT and PT.
  • Illustrate current stigmas and discomforts among therapists who work with individuals with substance use disorder.
  • Apply current treatment approaches used by PT and OT for persons with a history of substance use disorder.
  • Understand and compare interprofessional team members plan-of-care for people with substance use disorder.
  • Develop an appropriate initial evaluation for patients with substance use disorder using available assessment tools.

About the Author
Carol Myers, OTR, received a Bachelor of Psychology (BA) from the University of California-Berkeley, Bachelor of Science (BS) in Occupational Therapy from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA, and Master of Arts (MA) in organizational management from the University of Phoenix in Westminster, CO. Carol has been an occupational therapist for 38 years, working in skilled nursing, acute care, home health, and outpatient facilities, as well as in schools. Carol has published numerous articles for ADVANCE since 2003 and developed three webinars on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders for therapists and Quality Indicators in SNFs Related to Function. Carol taught in the first occupational therapy program in Vietnam, and consulted in two special needs classes in India, and an autism center in Nepal in 2019.
