Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting in Pennsylvania, 2nd edition (Initial Licensure)
About the Course
Child abuse and neglect remains a significant problem for us all in the U.S. as well as in Pennsylvania. Approximately 3.5 million children in the U.S. were the subjects of at least one child abuse or neglect report (United States Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2019). In Pennsylvania alone, there were 46,208 reports of suspected child and student abuse in 2017 (HHS, 2019). This course provides the details of the identification, assessment, and reporting of child abuse and reviews Pennsylvania state laws regarding child abuse and neglect.
Learning Outcomes
- Evaluate possible clinical, behavioral, and physical indicators of suspected child abuse and neglect to determine whether there is reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect.
- Explain criteria of mandated reporters in accordance with Pennsylvania law.

About the Author
Marilou Erb, JD, PhD has multiple degrees, including B.S. in both Forensic Psychology and Psychology, a Masters in Psychology as well as a Masters degree in Forensic Psychology, a Juris Doctorate. She is currently in the final stages of her dissertation on the topic of Exploratory analysis of criminal profiling protocols and techniques and will soon her Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology/Criminal Justice Concentration.

About the Author:
Molly Bathje, Ph.D., M.S., OTR/L is an assistant professor in the Occupational Therapy Program at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Bathje holds a bachelor of science in occupational therapy degree from Saint Ambrose University, a master of science in health systems management degree from Rush University, and a doctor of philosophy in interdisciplinary health sciences degree from Western Michigan University. During more than 20 years of practice as an occupational therapist, Dr. Bathje practiced in mental health, outpatient pediatric, acute care medicine, long term care and academic settings. A primary focus of her research and scholarship is understanding and addressing health disparities faced by adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in health care settings. She published several peer reviewed articles and presented nationally and internationally on this topic. She is part of an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional, grant funded project to create interdisciplinary educational materials focused on intellectual and developmental disabilities for health professional students. She is an assistant editor for the Open Journal of Occupational Therapy, served in multiple leadership positions within the state occupational therapy association, and is a board member for a nonprofit agency that initiates, provides and promotes services for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders in Occupational Therapy Practice, 3rd edition

Patricia Schaber,PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, was a faculty practitioner and research coordinator in the Memory Clinic at the University of Minnesota Medical Center – Fairview, the clinical arm of the N. Bud Grossman Center for Memory Research and Care. She is a professor in the Program in Occupational Therapy and Division of Rehabilitation Science at the University of Minnesota. She authored the 2010 Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Adults with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders and, in 2019, a chapter on dementia in Occupational Therapy in Mental Health: A Vision for Participation. She has served on the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council for the Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. She was employed for 13 years in geriatric occupational therapy in long-term care, home health care, and activities programming. She has a PhD in family social science, with a minor in aging research, from the University of Minnesota.

Depression and Anxiety Disorders in Older Adults, 3rd Edition

Sara Story, EdD, OTD, OTR/L, BCG, CAPS, is an associate professor of occupational therapy at Spalding University. Dr. Story has 14 years of experience working with older adults. Her interests, presentations, and publications include geriatric community-based therapy in utilizing technology to enhance outcomes in older adults, fall prevention, community mobility, and home modification and safety in underserved rural communities. Dr. Story is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and is Board Certified in Gerontology from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

About the Course
The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework-4th edition (AOTA, 2020b) provides practitioners with language and terminology that describes the domain and process of occupational therapy provided to clients, which can include persons, groups, or populations. Using the language endorsed by the AOTA strengthens documentation and enables others, outside of occupational therapy practice, to better understand the role of occupational therapy. However, it can be argued that most seasoned practitioners have not had formal training in using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework language and might have been trained under previous versions such as Uniform Terminology or might not be familiar with the most recent (4th Edition) published by AOTA (2020b). This basic-level course will provide an introduction to this language and foster its use for effective clinical documentation in a variety of occupational therapy practice settings. About the Author
Elizabeth D. DeIuliis, OTD, MOT, OTR/L, CLA, is currently a clinical associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Duquesne University, where she has been a faculty member for over 11 years. Dr. DeIuliis attended Duquesne University and graduated with a master’s degree in occupational therapy in 2004. In December 2009, she completed a post-professional doctorate of occupational therapy degree at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She continues to practice clinically on a per-diem basis at UPMC Shadyside Hospital within Centers of Rehab Services in Pittsburgh. Kathlyn L. Reed, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, MLIS, is an associate professor emeritus in the Sophie Lin Rydin School of Occupational Therapy, Texas Woman’s University, where she taught from 1997 to 2010. Dr. Reed received her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of Kansas, a master’s degree in occupational therapy from Western Michigan University, a master’s degree in library studies and information from the University of Oklahoma, and a doctorate in special education from the University of Washington in Seattle. She has published textbooks and peer-reviewed articles, and has presented at local, state, national, and international conferences. Dr. Reed is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association, has presented the Eleanor Clarke Slagle lecture, and has received the Award of Merit from the American Occupational Therapy Association. According to the results of the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 20.3 million people aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder related to alcohol or illicit drugs in the past year, including 14.8 million people who had an alcohol use disorder and 8.1 million who had an illicit drug disorder (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2018).
This basic, introductory course will provide an overview of the role of occupational therapy and physical therapy practitioners including theoretical frameworks to guide evaluation and intervention for individuals with a history of substance use. As occupational and physical therapists, we are in a unique position to offer a holistic approach to recovery for enhanced occupational participation/engagement, discovering purpose, and optimal well-being. Recovery can be defined as “a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential” (SAMHSA, 2020).

Traumatic Brain Injury: Occupational Therapy Interventions, 2nd Edition

Because TBI affects all age ranges, occupational therapy practitioners are likely to encounter clients with acute or chronic effects of TBI in any practice setting. Occupational therapy practitioners who do not practice primarily with clients with TBI are challenged to keep up with the latest information. About the Authors
Diana Davis, PhD, OTR/L, has over 30 years of clinical experience working in multiple settings with individuals with traumatic and acquired brain injury in Los Angeles, Louisville, KY, and West Virginia. She currently is an associate professor of occupational therapy at West Virginia University. She instructs students on evaluation and interventions for clients with neurological dysfunction and intervention to address long-term issues associated with chronic neurological disorders. She has published in the area of brain injury rehabilitation and community reintegration. Dr. Davis has presented extensively on topics related to brain injury, including parenting with disabilities, return to work, and community reintegration. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in occupational therapy at Western Michigan University and her master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education leadership and policy studies at West Virginia University.
Amanda Acord-Vira, EdD, OTR/L, CBIS, has been working with individuals with traumatic and acquired brain injury through clinical practice, research, and education since 2002. She received her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy and doctoral degree in Educational Psychology from West Virginia University and obtained her graduate certificate in special education and traumatic brain injury. Ms. Acord-Vira is an associate professor at West Virginia University in the division of occupational therapy. She has published and presented on the topic of brain injury at the state and national level in the areas of community participation, return to work, parenting with disabilities, and caregiving for brain injury survivors. She is also a coauthor for the “Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury” from the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Practice Guidelines Series.
Kristine Legters, PT, DSc, NCS, is a physical therapist with more than 30 years of experience examining and treating patients with neurologic dysfunction, of which 12 years were in brain injury rehabilitation. Her current clinical practice is with adults with developmental disabilities in the group home setting. Dr. Legters is the chair and an associate professor in the Gannon University Doctor of Physical Therapy program, where her primary teaching responsibilities are neuroscience and adult neurologic rehabilitation. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, a Master of Science degree in health science administration at Gannon University, and a Doctor of Science degree in neurological physical therapy at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. She is a Neurologic Certified Specialist with the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Dr. Legters has published and presented on a broad range of topics, including fear of falling in older adults and persons with vestibular dysfunction and post-polio syndrome.

About the Course
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex syndrome that may occur after exposure to one or more traumatic events. PTSD involves a characteristic set of symptoms that includes re-experiencing the traumatic event, avoiding stimuli associated with the traumatic event, having negative changes in mood or cognitions associated with or worsening after the traumatic event, and experiencing increased reactivity and arousal. With the high prevalence of trauma exposure within the U.S., health care professionals are providing care to many trauma-exposed patients who are at risk of developing PTSD, and who may not have the comfort level or skills needed to assess and intervene appropriately. It is essential for occupational therapy practitioners to be able to screen for the presence of traumatic experiences, as well as possible PTSD symptoms, in all encounters with clients and families so that referrals to treatment can be provided. This basic-level course provides an overview of PTSD for occupational therapy practitioners working in a variety of roles and settings. This course addresses basic information regarding PTSD, including DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, etiology, incidence, risk factors, interventions, and treatment methods. With distinct mental health training and education targeting occupational performance, occupational therapy practitioners are integral to the interdisciplinary team for those at risk for or diagnosed with PTSD and their families. Unique historical perspectives, assessment, and treatment practices specific to occupational therapy will also be presented.

About the Authors
Elizabeth A. Sherman, MA, MOT, OTR/L, (they/she) is a clinical occupational therapist and faculty member in the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) and Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) degree programs at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth received their BS in exercise science from West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania, her master of occupational therapy from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, and her MA in infant and early childhood development (IECD) from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California. Elizabeth is currently completing her PhD in the IECD program at Fielding with concentrations in reflective practice and the developmental, individual differences, relationship-based (DIR) model. Elizabeth has also completed a certificate program in evidence-based trauma-sensitive yoga methodology developed at the Justice Resource Institute in Massachusetts. Elizabeth is currently completing their dissertation on autistic-created and autistic-driven supports for agentic action in the autistic community across the life span. Elizabeth’s clinical occupational therapy work is focused primarily on neurodiversity-affirming (inherently trauma-informed) and community mutual aid support for autistic children and adults as well as collaborative mental health care for children, adults, and families. She presents regularly for graduate occupational therapy programs and state organizations across the U.S. Elizabeth’s current primary commitment to scholarship and service is engaging in collaborative, autistic-led advocacy efforts aimed at reducing systemic trauma and the incidence of PTSD in the autistic community through expanding access to basic needs and authentic community care for autistic community stakeholders.

Course Overview
According to the CDC, the fastest growing age group in the United States is those 65 and older. In fact, by 2060 older adults will make up 25% of the population. All health care providers will be involved in the care of this population of patients at some point throughout their careers.
It is essential that healthcare providers have an understanding of the changes that occur to the major systems of the body with aging and how these changes impact overall function and safety in order to provide the most thorough, individualized, and comprehensive care for older adults.
This course discusses at an in-depth level the physiological changes that occur with aging, the modifiable factors that impact the effects of aging, and how these contribute to the function of older adults. Participants will gain knowledge in assessing what changes are normal with aging versus those that are not, intervention strategies, and in addressing risk factors when they are identified.

Suzanne Greenwalt, a licensed physical therapist, received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from A.T. Still University and a Master in Physical Therapy from Saint Louis University. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities, acute care and outpatient rehabilitation. Suzanne is a board certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist and a board certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist. About the Course
This course is intended for physical therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training practitioners who address balance impairments and work to reduce falls in their patients and communities. This course defines balance and its components, describes how the various balance issues fall into these component categories and categorizes these impairments accordingly.
