About the Course:
When hearing the phrase “end-of-life care,” many healthcare professionals, as well as healthcare consumers, may think of older adults who are near the end of their lives, possibly at home or in a long-term care facility. However, nurses must help people of all ages (and their families) deal with end-of-life issues. A patient receiving end-of-life care may be a young child with cancer, a young adult who is in an intensive care unit following a catastrophic car accident, or an older adult who is at the end of a long life. The principles of end-of-life care are the same, nonetheless, and focus on providing the best possible care and emotional support for patients and families with compassion and respect for the dignity of the patient.  This course presents information regarding standards and competencies of palliative nursing practice, body changes as death nears, physical comfort measures at the end-of-life, factors relating to advance directives, and cultural considerations when providing end-of-life care.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss the standards and competencies of palliative nursing practice.
  • Describe body changes as death nears.
  • Identify comfort measures and nursing interventions for end-of-life care.
  • Identify important factors relating to advance directives.
  • Discuss religious/cultural considerations for end-of-life care.

About the Author:
Adrianne E. Avillion, D.Ed., RN, is an accomplished nursing professional development specialist and healthcare author. She earned a doctoral degree in adult education and a M.S. in nursing from Penn State University, and a B.S.N. from Bloomsburg University. Dr. Avillion has held a variety of nursing positions as a staff nurse in critical care and physical medicine and rehabilitation settings, as well as numerous leadership roles in professional development.
