Course Overview
Skin is the largest organ in the human body, playing an essential role in maintaining overall health and well-being. It serves as a protective barrier against environmental hazards, such as bacteria, viruses, and other harmful substances. As the first line of defense in our complex immune system, skin contains specialized immune cells that detect and respond to pathogens and skin regenerates after damage to protect underlying tissues. Additionally, skin provides a physical barrier against mechanical injury and harmful UV radiation from the sun.

Skin helps regulate body temperature by producing sweat to cool the body and by storing subcutaneous lipids for insulation and energy reserves to maintain warmth. It also contains sensory receptors and nerve endings that provide information on touch, pressure, pain, and temperature, enabling us to interact with and respond to our environment. Beyond its physical functions, healthy skin contributes significantly to psychological well-being. It boosts confidence, self-esteem, and helps us communicate emotions, all of which are crucial for social functioning.
